Key Light AMERICAN BOOK CLASSICS A new novel by poet and painter Pat Stewart |

THE STORY: Painter Sada Clark is ten when she falls in love with a Kandinsky poster nobody can explain to her. Like her hero, Mark Rothko, in front of whose paintings viewers openly wept, she grows to appreciate art on an emotional and spiritual level. She is especially passionate about abstract art. As a painter, she measures her beginning work against the Chagalls, Picassos, Miros and Matisses she studies; against the Klees, deKoonings, Pollacks and the modern Japanese art that intrigues her as she prepares to enter college. After an in-family adoption Sada's life takes an abrupt turn, plunging her and her family into turmoil. The spiritual and artistic journey of a fictional abstract painter, KEY LIGHT takes place in northern Illinois, in the staid and conventional Midwest where cow paintings sell. Family dynamics and decision making in crisis are at the heart of KEY LIGHT, played out against a jarring tapestry of abstract art. |

Reviews for Key Light |
"The notion that art is nothing more than an accessory for the living room sofa is soundly thrashed by this troubling and ultimately redemptive novel. Key Light is a dazzling and energetic debut. After a long and difficult journey Sada (and its author) have finally arrived." R. Christopher Hughes, Editor, tic magazine, Cheshire, UK "Key Light is for every artist, and for their puzzled parents. Author, Pat Stewart takes us on a journey with Sada, a woman blessed/cursed with artistic vision and commitment to the path that pulls her along. Like most artists, Sada recognizes what she feels only by viewing her own creations. Faith and trust in her vision and ruthless honesty with herself lead Sada to a gentle triumph. Key Light will encourage young artists to dare the journey." Sarah Stravinska, Author, In The Classical Tradition "The portrait of a young woman's journey to herself, this work has a richness of imagery to savor. Ms Stewart has a wonderfully sensitive touch in developing her characters and their unfolding relationships. Her characters come alive, interrelate and grow in wonderfully thought provoking ways. The story is filled with passion, reflection, revelation and self-discovery. Key Light speaks volumes about how we live as families and friends: the lies we tell, the masks we put on and take off, the shields built to protect which can also become destructive, the need for separateness and togetherness." Virginia A. Hirsch, Ph.D. |
